Egypt, a land famous for its generosity, was the first country to welcome the Holy Family after the flight from Bethlehem in Herod's time. It was therefore one of the first countries to be illuminated by the light of Christianity. Coptic Cairo is the hub of Egyptian Christianity, a haven of tranquility and peace and rich in history. The word "Coptic" meant "Egyptian" in classical Arabic. Today the word denotes the local Egyptian Christians. Archaeologists claim that there was a settlement here up to the 6th century BC. was a small settlement. The Roman Emperor Trajan founded a fortress here, which was called "Babylon Fortress".

There are several old churches in the Coptic Quarter. The oldest of which is the hanging churches.

There is also a synagogue.
